The Animal Care Center
Many visitors come to St. John and want to spend some of their time volunteering and giving back to the island. One awesome way you can do that is through St. John’s animal shelter, the Animal Care Center, or the ACC.
The ACC is located just off the traffic circle in Cruz Bay, towards Starfish Market. Their amazing staff has done so much for the furry friends on St. John, and there are so many opportunities to lend a helping hand. The ACC accepts volunteers for morning and afternoon walks. They assign you an adoptable dog to walk and you head off along the roads of Cruz Bay and enjoy the sights and sunshine with your new friend! You can also help clean kennels, cuddle the cats, and any other cleaning or organizing that the staff may need help with that day.
Donating is also a very important and necessary way to support St. John. The ACC uses the vet services at Canines, Cats & Critters, and they can always use help paying off their bill. You can bring down treats, blankets, food, flea & tick medication, and items like that with you on your trip, and hand deliver them to the grateful critters on the receiving end. Sunshine Daydream donates a boat charter to the ACC’s annual banquet each year, and if you own a business and are able to donate a product or service for the event, that is also an amazing way to help!
Another huge help to the ACC is escorting animals back to the states on your return flight. All you have to do is let them know which airport you’re flying into and which airline you’re on, and if they have an animals heading in your direction they will set you up with a carrier and directions on how to transfer the animal to their new home! It’s an awesome experience and an amazing opportunity to help an animal start his or her new life.
St. John is an incredible place that thrives with the help and support from our visitors. There are many ways to give back to the community during your vacation, and by spending some time at the Animal Care Center you can get a sense of the love and care that is provided for the animals, with support from you!
