The Perfect Coral Bay Day

Spending the day in Coral Bay is the perfect way to escape the bustle of Cruz Bay, and there is plenty to do and see when you head to the other side of St. John. When you think of Coral Bay, do you think of a relaxing day in the sun, or a day of exploration and adventure?

Whichever you decide, you are guaranteed to have an awesome day. If you want a more direct route straight through the island, Centerline Road will bring you all the way to Coral Bay. You’ll likely see some donkeys hanging out at the beautiful overlooks, and you’ll pass by some awesome hiking trails like the Reef Bay Trail. If you want to take the scenic route, North Shore Road takes you past the gorgeous beaches, and then drops you off back on Centerline to finish the journey until you hit the Coral Bay sign.

A Relaxing Day In The Sun

When you see the Coral Bay sign on your right, keep driving through the small part of town and head towards the East End. You’ll pass Haulover Bay, which is a great spot for a quick snorkel. Keep going down the road and you’ll arrive at Hansen Bay on your right. There is a large parking area that you are welcome to park in by making a small donation. There are benches, tables, beach chairs and floats that you can use to maximize your relaxation day. If you feel like going for a nice snorkel, there is a small reef over to the left of the beach, and a patch of sea grass just around the point. You will be able to see bright and beautiful coral, and watch the sea turtles munch on the grass while you float in the clear water.

After you’ve soaked up the sun and you’re ready for a drink and a bite to eat, head back in the direction you came, and stop in at Skinny Legs. Browse through the shops on your way to the bar, and order a classic painkiller or a local beer. Their chalkboard menu features the best burgers on St. John, and be sure to order one of their daily specials. The open air seating, the friendly faces and the local vibes are the best way to end your relaxing day in Coral Bay.

Adventure Time

Coral Bay also has amazing hikes and snorkel spots. When you reach the Coral Bay sign, turn right and head towards Salt Pond. Once you arrive, there is a short walk down to the beach. Once you get settled, you can take the first path on the left towards Drunk Bay. This hike will take you to a beach with endless coral and rock formations, and you can turn them into figures or words, and leave your mark on St. John.

If you keep going straight down the beach, you will reach the Ram Head trail. Ram Head is a somewhat strenuous hike, so be sure to bring plenty of water. The view at the point is unbeatable, and you will feel like you are on top of the world. Sit down and enjoy the view and a picnic, or head back down to the beach for your next adventure. Salt Pond is known for their beautiful sea turtles. The sea grass is plentiful so you can swim along with the turtles and see how they spend their afternoon.

After you’ve worked up an appetite, head back towards town and stop at Aqua Bistro. Be sure to order one of their amazing bushwhackers, and an order of conch fritters to start. You might be lucky enough to catch some live music from one of our many talented local artists, and you can finish your day with some singing and dancing.
